RUSSIAN CULTURAL FESTIVAL GETS UNDERWAY IN SOFIA
2010-07-09The Festival of Russian Culture had its opening ceremony yesterday at the Capital Library in Sophia, Bulgaria. This month long event has been organized by mayor's office of Sofia and the Russian Culture and Information Center. The program of the festival includes numerous events aimed at popularizing Russian culture in Bulgaria. These include modern Russian literature exhibitions, presentations of new publications on the Russian diaspora in Bulgaria, Russian film events, literary evenings dedicated Russian poets and writers, performances of the Russian Chamber Theater and Russian song nights.
Director of the Capital Library Academic Mikhail Belchev noted the deep historical ties between Russia and Bulgaria and the great contribution of literary exchanges for the benefit of cultural cooperation. At the opening ceremony, welcome notes were read from the Russian Embassy and representative of Rossotrudnichestvo in Bulgaria. Performances were given by Ryazan Music Theater soloist Lidia Tarasova and the popular Bulgarian group Grammofon.
The Capital Library, one of the largest libraries in Bulgaria, is greatly contributing to the level of public awareness in Bulgaria of Russian artistic and academic literature. The library has over 99,000 books in Russian and 200,000 volumes of literature translated from the Russian language.
